ASTRO member and actor Cha Eun Woo is embroiled in a massive tax evasion controversy involving approximately 20 billion KRW ($13.83 million), placing his career in jeopardy just a year before his military discharge.
The Investigation: According to reports, the Seoul Regional Tax Office concluded that a corporation established by Cha Eun Woo’s mother was a “paper company” lacking substantive operations. Authorities allege the entity was used to divert high-value income (ads/appearance fees) to avoid higher personal income tax rates. This reported assessment marks the largest ever for a Korean celebrity.
Industry Impact: The fallout has been swift. Major brands, including Shinhan Bank, have reportedly begun scrubbing Cha Eun Woo from their social media and YouTube channels. The scandal is particularly damaging given his long-standing reputation for a flawless public image.
Official Response: His agency, Fantagio, maintains that the issue is not yet finalized, stating, “The core issue is whether the corporation qualifies as a substantive taxation subject.” They have pledged full cooperation with tax authorities.
Cha Eun Woo is currently serving in the military and is scheduled for discharge on January 27, 2027.
